MLB among first high-profile companies to embrace iOS 6’s new Passbook app

MLB among first high-profile companies to embrace iOS 6’s new Passbook appClose on the heels of Apple's official release of its updated iOS 6 mobile operating system on Wednesday, Major League Baseball (MLB) was among the first few high-profile companies to publicly embrace the Passbook app which - one of the flagship additions to iOS 6 - is essentially a virtual wallet for storing electronic tickets, boarding passes and coupons.

Despite the fact that device owners do not have much information about the Passbook app aboard iOS 6, as Apple has hardly offered any details about how the app would work, MLB has evidently jumped on to the new app, with its unveiling of mobile ticketing via digital passes and card management feature of the iOS 6.

In a Wednesday night announcement, MLB Advanced Media - the interactive media division of Major League Baseball - revealed that ticketing through the new Passbook app will be supported by four teams --- the San Francisco Giants, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, and Kansas City Royals.

MLB Advanced Media further added that fans attending games for these four teams will not only be able to store electronic tickets on their iPhones and iPod touches, but also use these tickets for attending home games for the remaining part of the 2012 season.

Terming the Passbook tickets as a "great step forward" in the direction of paperless event tickets, MLB Advanced Media's VP of corporate communications - said that he can already envision a future in which digital tickets will be widely used by fans.
