Apple to be sole vendor of new iPhone’s adapters and cables, at least initially

Apple to be sole vendor of new iPhone’s adapters and cables, at least initiallyAccording to a recent iLounge report, citing unidentified sources familiar with Apple's plans, the adapters and the USB cables for the new, smaller dock connector of the next-generation iPhone - which will likely be unveiled on September 12 - will initially be offered exclusively by Apple.

Revealing that Apple will be the sole vendor for the new iPhone dock connector's adapters and cables at launch, the iLounge sources said that the new `Dock Connector Adapter' will be priced at nearly $10, with three-packs to cost around $19.

In addition, the sources also said that the USB cables for charging and syncing the new iPhone will also be sold only by Apple. These cables will be Apple's own accessories for the forthcoming handset and will be priced at $19 apiece.

With the disclosure by iLounge sources implying that there will apparently be no third-party adapters available for the new iPhone, at least initially, sources in the third-party accessory business have revealed that the businesses are concerned about Apple's likelihood of blocking out cable makers, similar to what the company has already done with the MagSafe connector on its laptops.

Meanwhile, drawing attentions to the iLounge sources' revelation that Apple expects to "sell the first 10 million Adapters by the end of 2012," the iLounge report's author Jeremy Horwitz said that, as per one source, "Apple will reap a windfall by limiting competition in this manner, generating revenues of $100 million for every 10 million Dock Connector Adapters it sells for $10."
