Google’s Motorola Files New Case Against Apple at ITC

Google’s Motorola Files New Case Against Apple at ITCIn its new patent-infringement complaint filed against Apple at the US International Trade Commission (ITC), Google’s Motorola Mobility division has claimed that some Apple devices are equipped with features which violate its patents.

According to Motorola Mobility’s claims, Apple’s devices infringe on seven of its patents pertaining to features like the Siri voice assistant program, e-mail notification, location reminders, and handset and video players.

With the filing of the new complaint – the second one - at ITC, Motorola Mobility is seeking a ban on the US imports of some of Apple’s devices, including the iPhone, iPad and Mac computers, which, incidentally, are manufactured in Asia.

Though a copy of Motorola Mobility’s new complaint against Apple is yet to be made available, the ITC is already scheduled to announce its final ruling in the earlier case on August 24; and that verdict would likely lead to an import ban on the iPhone.

Apple and Motorola Mobility – which was purchased by Internet search giant Google in May this year – have been fighting legal battles against each other since at least 2010 after licensing talks fell through.

About the filing of the new complaint, Motorola Mobility said in an e-mailed statement that though it “would like to settle these patent matters,” it is “Apple’s unwillingness to work out a license” which leaves the company with hardly any choice, other than defending itself as well as the innovations of its engineers.
