According to two unnamed sources aware of the proceedings at Research In Motion (RIM), the enterprise-services division of the struggling BlackBerry-maker has apparently drawn interest from International Business Machines(IBM).
One of the sources revealed in the condition of anonymity, that IBM has informally approached RIM with the likelihood of acquiring its enterprise-services unit. While there has been no official disclosure about the move, Berenberg Bank has speculated that value of RIM’s enterprise-services division would probably fall in the range of between $1.5 billion and $2.5 billion, depending on the mix of assets that could be included.
The unofficial revelation, by the source, that IBM has shown interest in RIM’s enterprise-services division is a notable one, especially in the wake of the fact that earlier reports have revealed that no company has thus far shown interest in purchasing all of RIM or its handset-manufacturing division.
However, the source has asserted that, as of now, no negotiations are being held about the potential sale of the RIM unit, probably because the company will apparently wait for its early-2013-scheduled launch of BlackBerry 10 handsets.
Substantiating the source’s observation, Berenberg analyst Adnaan Ahmad said that RIM would probably “want to give BlackBerry 10 a go,” and hence the sale of its enterprise-services division – or even any other unit – is not likely to happen till 2013. Nonetheless, Ahmad also added that if RIM were to offload this (the enterprise-services unit), they are offloading their jewel.”
