Google Inks Patent Deal With Rovi for Google Fiber Internet search giant Google and digital entertainment technology firm Rovi have recently inked a multi-year patent deal, which will give Google a license for using Rovi's technology for its forthcoming Google Fiber service.

Under the patent license agreement, Santa Clara-based Rovi - which boasts a portfolio that includes nearly 5,100 issued or pending patents - will license its interactive guide patent portfolio, which is used on set-top boxes and mobile and online platforms, to Google.

Google's patent license deal with Rovi - the financial terms of which remain undisclosed - comes close on the heels of its last-week official announcement of its plans for the Google Fiber Pay-TV service, which will provide 1 gigabit `Internet plus TV' service at in Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas, beginning 2013.

After already having announced last month that it intends charging `$70 a month' for its much-awaited, super-speedy Internet service in Kansas City, Google recently said that it is currently is testing new ways for using the Internet there.

Meanwhile, about the Google-Rovi patent deal, Samir Armaly - Rovi's Executive VP of Worldwide Intellectual Property & Licensing - said that the agreement marks a continuation of the "growth and relevance" of Rovi's patent licensing program for traditional platforms as well as new media experiences across multiple screens.

Armaly also added in his statement: "We are pleased that the relevance of our intellectual property in this space continues to be recognized by leading companies such as Google."
