In a move which marks Cisco System's ongoing attempts in the direction of restructuring to reduce costs and increase profits, the San Jose, California-based company said in an emailed statement on Monday that it intends laying off nearly 1,300 employees.
The jobs which Cisco plans to cut which involve 2 percent of the company's workforce; and the move comes at a time when the sales of the top-ranking computer-networking equipment maker are likely to suffer blows from the debt crisis in Europe as well as sluggish corporate spending.
Noting that the job-cuts are part of Cisco's plan to drive "simplicity, speed of decisions and agility" across the company, spokesperson Karen Tillman said that the move will also help the company assess the economic environment in certain parts of the world.
The proposed round of job-cuts by Cisco - which had 65,223 workers at the end of its third quarter - come almost a year after the company disclosed its plans to slash approximately 14 percent of its worldwide workforce, or approximately 11,500 employees, including 15 percent layoffs of employees working at senior levels - that is, at the vice president level or higher.
Terming the job-cuts decision as part of Cisco's endeavors to cut costs and streamline decision-making, the company said in the emailed statement that it continues to evaluate its organizational structure and "routinely" reviews its business to determine ascertain where it needs "to align investment based on growth opportunities."
