In a blog post announcement on Wednesday, Google's popular video-sharing site YouTube revealed that it has launched a new tool - "Blur All Faces" - which will enable the users to blur out faces in uploaded videos.
The notably easy blurring feature will allow fast and free anonymity to users who may be afraid of reprisal by public viewers; giving them a mechanism whereby they can hide their identities in a world which appears to be abound in seemingly ubiquitous cameras.
Since the new tool released by YouTube will allow people to automatically blur faces appearing in videos, it can be of notable use for activists who are likely to suffer serious repercussions upon being identified in videos. In fact, the tool can not only be used for merely obscuring some faces, but also for recognizing as well as blurring all faces in an uploaded video.
However, though the "Blur All Faces" tool can identify and blur all the faces in a video, it is being advised that people featuring in the video clippings should still pay attention to what they are attired in, where they are, and what is in the background --- as these things can probably help identify them.
Warning that the new blurring tool is not 100% reliable, Google said in a blog post that some faces might not actually be blurred; and added that "it sometimes has difficulty detecting faces depending on the angle, lighting, obstructions and video quality."
