WSJ: Amazon is currently testing its Kindle Phone handset

WSJ: Amazon is currently testing its Kindle Phone handsetAmid the emergence of increasing details pertaining to a much-reported Amazon Kindle Phone, a new Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report has revealed that the phone is currently being tested by the bigwig online retailer.

Citing the information shared by an unidentified source familiar with the proceedings at Amazon, the WSJ report has revealed that the phone which is being tested by Amazon has a screen size of between 4 and 5 inches, which is in line with the current standard in the smartphone arena.

Going by the details shared by unnamed officials at Amazon's parts providers, the online retail giant is testing its Kindle Phone handset in tandem with component suppliers in Asia; and the smartphone will likely hit the markets by the end of 2012 or the beginning of 2013.

The reports about the Amazon Kindle Phone started making rounds late last year, when Citigroup analyst Mark Mahaney reported that Amazon could likely launch its own Kindle-branded handset by the fourth quarter of 2012.

Mahaney's revelation about a forthcoming handset from Amazon was based on a supply chain check in Asia; and the analysts also added that the handset was being developed by Amazon in partnership with Foxconn International Holdings.

Despite the fact that Amazon refrained from making any official comments on Mahaney's report, the analysts also predicted that the production cost of Amazon's Kindle Phone would be between $150 and $170, with its retail pricing also being in the same range.
