In a move which underscores that Dropbox has apparently yielded to competitive pressure, the popular consumer online storage service revealed in a Tuesday announcement that it intends upgrading its Pro plans to double their capacity, but without bringing about an increase in their costs.
The announcement implies that the 50GB and 100GB accounts of the Dropbox users of the company's Pro plans will respectively be upgraded to 100GB and 200GB. However, with there being no change in the prices, the 100GB plan will cost $9.99 per month or $99 a year; while the 200GB option will cost $19.99 per month or $199 a year.
With the service to be automatically updated overnight on Tuesday, the present users of the Dropbox Pro plans will be upgraded to the supersized version of their accounts; with the changes to be reflected in the simultaneously updated Dropbox pricing page.
In addition to upgrading the storage capacity by two times, at unchanged costs, Dropbox has also come up with a three-month Pro 100 trial for the current users; and has also added a new, 500GB option to its service plans.
About the upgrading of Pro plans by Dropbox without a price hike, Gartner analyst Michael Gartenberg said that the emergence of Apple, Google and other bigwig companies on the online storage arena has made it imperative for companies like Dropbox "to make sure they're not overpriced in terms of consumer perception and to continue to come up with added services."
