Following the data request trend which Internet search giant Google has set in the last two years, popular microblogging site Twitter has also decided to release biannual reports about the user-information demands by US and foreign governments.
Posting the first set of data on its website on late Monday, Twitter revealed that the first six months of the ongoing year had witnessed the online messaging service process as many as 849 government requests about its users; with the officials being handed out part of the requisite information in 63 percent of the cases.
According to the information shared by Twitter, the list of requests for users' details was led, by far, by the US government, which submitted 679 requests. The microblogging service also said that 75 percent of the requests by the US government had been complied with.
The country ranking second on the requests lists was Japan, which had submitted 98 requests; followed by the UK and Canada, both of which filed 11 requests for Twitter users' information. All the remaining countries on the list had sought user details from Twitter 10 or fewer times since January 1, 2012.
Overall, Twitter revealed in its post that the government requests it received for users' data in the first half of this year was more than the total number of requests it had received in the whole of 2011. The company also said that, henceforth, it will be publishing reports detailing governments' requests for users' data two times a year.
