Nicotine vaccine being worked on

Nicotine vaccine being worked onPeople who want to leave smoking will soon see that they will be able to do so with the help of a vaccine.

Nicotine addiction can be treated with a vaccine developed by researchers at Weill Cornell Medical College and they have conducted tests in mice.

Liver cells are modified genetically by a harmless virus that is used by the vaccine. This in turn will churn out a steady stream of nicotine antibodies.

The moment nicotine comes in contact with the bloodstream; it is gobbled up by the antibodies. The chemical before can bring in a sought-after fix is destroyed.

Dr Ronald Crystal, chairman of Genetic Medicine at Weill Cornell, said,

“The antibody is like a little Pac-Man floating around in the blood, and it grabs onto the nicotine and prevents it from reaching the brain, so there’s no reward. With a single administration of the vaccine, we converted the liver to make the antibody, and it lasts for the life of the mouse.”

Many mice were taken for this test that was conducted in New York lab. He plans to test rats next and then primates. He also stated that it will take atleast three years when human testing will be done.
