Google's futuristic glasses move closer to reality

Google's futuristic glasses move closer to realityGoogle's April-announced futuristic "Project Glass" experiment is apparently moving a step closer to reality, with the company announcing on Wednesday - the first day of its annual three-day developers' conference - that a prototype of the Internet-connected glasses will be sold to US computer programmers attending its developers' conference in San Francisco.

According to the announcement, developers who make a payment of $1,500 for the futuristic glasses will have the prototype product shipped to them in early 2013.

Noting that Google was hopeful that the programmers will suggest improvements as well as build applications which will enhance the usefulness of the glasses, Google co-founder Sergey Brin - addressing the nearly 6,000 attendees of the conference - said that the glasses essentially underscores "new technology," and that Google was banking on the developers to "shape it."

Further adding that Google was keen on getting the glasses "into the hands of passionate people as soon as possible," Brin hinted that, if things proceed as per plan, a more affordable version of the glasses will likely hit the markets in early 2014.

While responding to the questions asked by the reporters during a question-answer session with the media, Brin said that Google is aware of the fact that a number of bugs in the glasses still need to be fixed, and their battery life needed improvement. Nonetheless, he also added alongside that Google views its futuristic glasses as "a premium sort of thing."
