Bing Maps adds 165TB of new images of EarthIn a recent blog post, Microsoft's Bing search engine has revealed that the total mount of data offered by Bing Maps has now increased more than two times in size --- with the search engine now offering 165 terabytes (TB) of new birds-eye-view satellite images of locations all across the globe, instead of the previous data amount of 129TB.

Revealing that Bing Maps' latest offering of 165TB of new images of the Earth marks the biggest satellite data release thus far, Bing said in the blog post that the new release "features imagery over North America, South America, Africa, Australia, Europe and Asia."

In addition, revealing that, other than satellite imagery, the new release of data also includes Global Ortho Photography taken from aircrafts or satellites, Bing said that the total area which the latest data release covers is approximately 38 million square kilometers.

Elaborating further, Bing said that it has, as of this month, completed 100 percent of aerial photography of the US, and that it hopes to finish its photography over Europe by 2012 end. Bing also said that the Global Ortho Photography on its mapping engine covers nearly 9.54 million square kilometers.

About the data dump, which the company said described as the "largest satellite release to date" for Bing, a Microsoft said in a recent blog post: "In fact, this release is larger than all of our past Aerial releases combined!"
