Managers urged to act due to Edinburgh Legionnaires' outbreak

Managers urged to act due to Edinburgh Legionnaires' outbreakTo manage the Legionnaires' disease in Scotland, monitoring and maintaining water systems on a regular basis is what company managers are being urged to do.

The importance of monitoring waiter systems in buildings was highlighted by the recent cases in Edinburgh, according to property services firm DTZ.

There should be regular inspection of the equipment and it should be ensured by facilities managers, said DTZ.

Corporate reputation was risked by the companies that failed to do so.

The outbreak that started in the end of May has claimed two lives and there have been 44 confirmed cases in the outbreak. Identification of the sources is yet to be done.

Keith Emerson, regional facilities manager for DTZ in Scotland, said, "These latest cases have highlighted the critical importance of effective management of building water systems. Evaporative cooling systems are often associated with larger outbreaks but it is also important to note that domestic water services are regularly implicated as the source of smaller and more isolated incidents of Legionnaires' Disease."

There have to be stringent procedures in place to ensure that the facilities are safe and managers of buildings of all sizes need to be vigilant for this.
