In an announcement via a Friday blog post, Cisco's OJ Winge - the SVP of the company's TelePresence Technology Group - said that the company is killing its Android-based Cius tablet, which has now been cut from future development plans.
Making the announcement about Cisco's decision to discontinue Cius tablet, Winge said in the blog post that the company will not invest in the Cisco Cius tablet form factor any more; and will also not make any further enhancements to the current Cius endpoint "beyond what's available today."
Despite the fact that Cisco has decided to kill Cius, the tablet boasts some notable features, like pre-installed Cisco software such as WebEx, Cisco Quad, and Cisco Show. In addition, the tablet also has a proprietary messaging app and its supports Cisco Telepresence video conferencing.
About the reason behind Cisco's decision to kill Cius tablet, Winge said that the move is essentially an upshot of an increase in what can be described as the "bring your own device" to work (BYOD) programs. However, Winge also added that Cius will now be offered "in a limited fashion to customers with specific needs or use cases."
Meanwhile, noting that Cisco still wants to be a part of the tablet space, even though it is bowing out of the hardware component, Winge said that the company would look to "leverage key learnings and key collaboration experiences native to Cius in our other collaboration products."
