In an announcement which marks Nvidia's first collaboration with Chinese smartphone maker ZTE, the chip-maker revealed on Monday that it was coming up with a new smartphone - dubbed Mimosa X - which will boast Nvidia's Tegra 2 mobile processor, and an Icera 450 HSPA+ modem.
The ZTE Mimosa X, which will be sold under the Nvidia brand name and will be powered exclusively by the company's technology, will be the first Android-based handset which will use Nvidia's products for applications processing as well as wireless communications; thus underscoring the benefits of Nvidia's June 2011 acquisition of wireless modem maker Icera.
According to the information shared by Nvidia and ZTE, the Mimosa X will feature a 4.3-inch screen with qHD 960 x 540 pixel resolution, 4GB of on-board storage expandable to 32 GB via microSD, and the newest Android 4.0 `Ice Cream Sandwich' operating system.
The dual camera smartphone - which, according to Nvidia, will be launched "around Q2 2012" - will be capable of accessing the `TegraZone' app store, which sells games mostly for the devices featuring with Tegra processors. Moreover, the handset will also have Dolby sound, and advanced audio distribution profile (A2DP), and will be compatible with digital living network alliance (DLNA).
Noting that the ZTE Mimosa X "marks the first time NVIDIA technology powers all the major processors in a single smartphone," Michael Rayfield - Nvidia's General Manager of the Mobile business at - said that it is also for the first time that a handset will bring on "a premium mobile computing experience" to the "mainstream smartphone market."
