In a move quite on the lines of the rumored Apple iTV, Google is reportedly preparing some type of an "entertainment device" which will initially be designed for streaming music through Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, but will have the potential for further expansion in the future.
According to Google's recent filing with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the "entertainment device" will connect to other home electronics; and will be controlled via an Android-based handset or tablet.
Reports from the Wall Street Journal and New York Times have revealed that the "entertainment device" will be sold under the Google brand name; and will likely be launched later this year. The device will stream music from Google's online Music service, the beta of which was introduced by Google in 2011.
As per the information shared by unnamed sources `in the know' of proceedings at Google, the "entertainment device" or the streaming box being prepared by Google will ultimately boast the capability of handling video, most likely via a software update later on.
The box will seemingly be connected to the Android@Home project which was announced by Google last year; and which enables smartphones and tablets to control specific speakers in a home within the network.
Despite the fact that details about the "entertainment device" are still somewhat vague, a couple of reports have hinted that Google may develop the device by using resources Motorola Mobility - which Google is in the process of acquiring - because of the fact that Motorola has experience in building home entertainment systems.
