Electric-car maker Tesla Motors recently unveiled its new battery-powered sport-utility vehicle (SUV) - the all-electric Model X - which has two electric motors and "gull-wing" doors, and will be available with all-wheel drive.
According to the details shared by Tesla CEO Elon Musk during the Thursday unveiling of a prototype of Model X at Tesla's design studio in Hawthorne, California, the crossover new, all-electric will be manufactured at the Tesla's Fremont, California, plant; and will hit the markets next year, after the debut of the Model S sedan. Deliveries of the SUV will commence in late 2013 and increase all through 2014.
As per Tesla, Model X will be much speedier than the 911 sports car from Porsche AG with a 0-60 mph time of barely just 4.4 seconds, and more spacious than the Q7 SUV from Audi AG. The new Tesla SUV will have three rows of seating for up to seven people, and superior maneuverability than a Mini Cooper.
Tesla's new Model X boasts a 17-inch touch screen for navigation, audio and other vehicle controls; and has doors which open upward. Revealing that the second-row doors "are like gull-wing doors, but we call them `falcon-wing' doors," Musk said at the SUV's unveiling that these doors provide the most convenient access to the rear seats of any luxury vehicle.
Further adding that Model X shares a platform and battery system with Model S, Musk said that so-called Dual Electric Motor All Wheel Drive will ensure the SUV has better all-weather traction while maintaining efficiency as well as acceleration.
