Officials to discuss Blackberry ban before August 31

blackberryGovernment officials may meet next week to discuss placing a ban on corporate email service on Blackberry devices from Research In Motion (RIM) as the deadline of August 31 nears.  

The officials could decide if the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) would be banned in the country. Home Secretary GK Pillai is expected to chair the meeting and review the progress made by the company is presenting mechanisms to address the security issues raised by home ministry and security agencies.

The government has cleared other services such as the BlackBerry messenger, voice calls and short-messaging services of the company after it addressed security concerns raised by security officials in the country.

RIM provided has given security agencies an existing tool that’s allows them to monitor text on encrypted BlackBerry messenger and the company is developing a tool to give to security agencies around the world. Security officials are now able to monitor Blackberry Internet, voice calls and short messaging.

The Home Ministry had said earlier that these services would be blocked if the security agencies are not given access to the data. As for emails on the device the telecoms ministry suggests that a copy of corporate email, sent to a BlackBerry handset through an enterprise server located in the premises of any company, should be made available to monitoring systems of the Inter service providers in the country.

Some reports suggest that the officials are asking the company to set up a server in the country. Government officials have held various meetings with representatives of RIM to find a solution to the problem.
