Stem cells aid in restoration of vision

The ongoing trials based on stem cells role in restoration of vision of 82 people with eyes blinded by chemical or heat burns, have shown impressive results.

The reports thrown in by the finding lists out that 107 eye patients who were treated a decade ago, showed successful cases of sight restoration to a level up to 0.9 on a visual acuity scale, in which 1 represents perfect vision, states Graziella Pellegrini from the University of Modena in Italy.

In case of patients who suffered eye burns in one eye, researchers treated them with corneal stem cells extracted from their good eye.

The scientists explained the procedure that involved the extraction of stem cells which were taken from the limbus, a disc surrounding the iris that further helped in restoring the transparency to corneas that had become opaque via the destruction of the damaged eye storage of corneal stem cells.

These results were posted in The New England Journal of Medicine.
