Honda Challenges Trade Union in China

The management of Japanese auto major, Honda, has challenged the trade unions controlled by the country’s Communist Party on Monday. Honda has done something, which the foreign corporations in China have always avoided doing.

After recent strikes by labors, Honda has increased the salaries and has also has issued advertisements for additional staff, which would apparently be used to replace striking workers. 2,000 Yuan has been offered to each worker in the advertisements. This is 300 Yuan more than the current wages.

The initiative taken by the management of Honda Lock in the Xiaolan Township in the South China region of Guangdong caused further dissatisfaction among the workers.

"The move triggered strong dissatisfaction among workers, as they themselves can only earn 1,700 Yuan per month now", said Dong Zuwen, Deputy Head of the Xiaolan township.

This move of Honda might make Chinese Government to think and take a call on it. Plant representatives of the trade union, which are under the control of Government, have worked in close partnership with foreign corporations since the economic reforms commenced three decades back. Foreign Companies never tried to publicly confront trade unions, although there have been few cases of disputes.

Dong said that will return to work on Sunday morning after the settlement of pays, even though the increase in salaries is less than what they had expected. However, they were shocked to see the advertisements of Company.
