With the aim of developing 4G technologies; the world's largest mobile carrier, the Beijing-based China Mobile Ltd, will join forces with Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI).

The news was revealed by Wang Jianzhou, chairman of the state-run Chinese company, during his visit to the Hsinchu Science Park in Hsinchu City, northern Taiwan. There, he also specified that he will hold a meeting with Morris Chang, founder and chairman of the world's largest chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC).

The main motive of Wang is to find opportunities to form alliances with local high-tech enterprises, in order to open up the vast mainland China market to advanced telecommunication products.

Wang, since his arrival on 21st August, has signed a memorandum with Taiwan's handset maker HTC Corp. in order to jointly create smartphones and relevant technologies. Apart from this, he also had meetings with many local high-tech tycoons, including Chunghwa Telecom Chairman Lu Shyue-ching and Acer Inc. Chairman J. T. Wang, for possible cooperation.

It was confirmed by Wang at the science park that the basic aim behind his visit was to find cooperation ventures to permit his company to open China's 3G market. He said: "The network infrastructure in China has expanded quickly but the development of smartphones has failed to catch up with the pace of infrastructure expansion."

Wang, who called at MediaTek Inc., Taiwan's leading fabless semiconductor company, at the park for wireless communications and digital multimedia solutions, said that he has many hopes for strategic alliances with companies within the Hsinchu Science Park.
