The salmon farms are being blamed for the decline in wild salmon stocks. It is posing a threat to an industry that employs thousands of Vancouver Island residents. The B. C. Salmon Farmers Association warned that the real issues around conservation are being avoided.
Mary Ellen Walling, Executive Director of the BC Salmon Farmers Association said, "We agree that wild salmon are very important and need to be protected - but there are a multitude of factors that are contributing to their struggle".
She further added that focusing on the elimination of salmon farms is shortsighted and misguided.
While, Alexandra Morton continued her 'get out migration' anti-fish farm walk down Vancouver Island. Misinformation was being spread about the effect of salmon farms on wild salmon stocks, according to Walling.
According to recent studies, Pacific salmon had developed a natural ability to oppose sea lice damage and even discard them once they reached a certain size. There was no indication about sea lice becoming resistant to treatment. Over the last five years, lice counts as well as treatment levels had gone down.
She insisted that "B. C.'s salmon farmers want to see wild salmon protected. If the industry wants to be truly successful, it has to be accountable to the environment, economy and communities.
