Green Tea is rich in catechins, an anti-oxidant which helps in protecting the eyes. It was recently discovered that the catechins found in Green Tea, after journeying through the stomach and gastrointestinal tract, managed to reach the eye tissues. Trials were conducted on rats fed with Green Tea, to prove this and the examination of their eye-tissues revealed the fact.
Polyphenyls constitute about 30% of the substances found in Green Tea. One of the most important substances that aids in antioxidant activity, is Epigallocatechingallate, which constitutes 50-60% of the total Catechins content found in Green tea.
Different parts of the eye absorb anti oxidants found in Green tea in different proportions. While, retina witnessed the highest absorption of Gallocatechin, aqueous humor absorbed Epigallocatechin the most. Its effect on oxidative stress is as long as 20 hours.
Researchers said, “Our results indicate that green tea consumption could benefit the eye against oxidative stress”.
Green Tea is not only beneficent for eyes, but has been connected with offering relief against umpteen conditions such as constipation, tooth decay, some forms of cancer. Chinese have been tapping the goodness of this type of tea for the past 4000 years.
The population where Glaucoma has become a serious concern, Green Tea consumption offers a hope.
