According to the 2007 statistics of the National AIDS Control Organization, out of a billion populations in India, almost 2.3 million people are living with HIV or AIDS.
A study has shown that every particular non-group mediclaim plan issued in India permanently prohibits hospitalization costs acquired, via any sexually-transmitted diseases including AIDS.
It is said that having a health insurance policy for years does not matter even if a penny hasn't been claimed for about 10 years. If the HIV virus infects a person in the 11th year, he will still not be covered for any hospitalization expenses incurred due to this.
HIV/Aids as a disease is relatively new at around 25 - 30 years and there is still no certified cure for the same. The expenses required for treatment and eventual outcome is uncertain.
The insurance business relies on data about the number of people getting affected by the disease plus the standard cost for treating such a sickness and ultimate results to price its product correctly.
It has been said that, since HIV/Aids is such a big topic, the Government would improve to produce some kind of a general re-insurance pool. Similarly, like it has done for terrorism cover, without which the expenditure of covering this threat is probable to be high-priced.
