KEM Doctor Presents Saarc Youth Award 2009 to Dr Patil

The Saarc Youth Award 2009 is bagged for a civic hospital doctor’s contribution towards the remedy work in flood-hit Bihar in 2008. He has devoted the award to a colleague doctor who died through the task after being hit by a lightning.

It is reported that Dr. Ravikant Singh, from KEM Hospital in Parel, spent over six months organizing Mumbai youths' hard work in offering health and civilized help to flood-hit people in six districts of Bihar.

It is said that this was the aid operation in which one of the Mumbai’s, Dr Chandrakant Patil, died after being struck by a lightining in September 2008.

At a press conference held on Tuesday, Dr. Singh said that he was devoting the Saarc honor to KEM Hospital "for his education" and Dr. Patil "without whom I would not have got the support, both emotional and physical, for the relief operation".

It was reported that the young doctor lost his life on the fifth day of his stay in Bihar, but some of his friends stayed back to treat patients.

In his memory, they united with NGO Mercy Malaysia to situate a mother and child health center in Bihar, since then the clinic has treated more than 30,000 people and 950 pregnant women.

The award will be presented to Dr. Singh Thimpu, Bhutan, on April 27.
