Indian Spices and Powders Rich in Lead, Dangerous for Children: Researchers

spicesAmerican health experts have discovered that the Indian spices and powders can expose the young children to toxic lead. The study explained that the consumption of these spices adds to the threat of lead poisoning in children, particularly in those below 6 years of age, thereby leading to neurological impairment.

The doctors further said that the even the minute amount of lead can induce apparent changes in the behavior of the kids.

The researchers examined 86 Indian spices and 71 ceremonial powders, taken from 15 separate retailers in Boston. They concluded that 22 out of the 86 spices taken and 46 out of the 71 ceremonial powders were rich in lead.

On a surprising note, the net composition of lead in these spices outdid the estimations of both E. U. and U. S. Food and Drug Administration.

Out of the two, the powders were found to be richer in the lead concentration, as compared to the spices. The composition in powders was found to be around 67%.

The Indian spices and powders were typically found to be full of double the amount of lead found in other foreign goods.

"This is not a total shocker", said Dr. David Acheson, the ex-Associate Commissioner for FDA.
