Microsoft Corp. CEO Steve Ballmer is reportedly planning a significant restructuring of the software firm that would see the firm evolve to more of a "devices & services" firm.

Within days of the rather surprising Monday announcement by Microsoft about the departure of the company's Windows chief Steven Sinofsky, CEO Steve Ballmer praised Sinofsky for his "amazing contributions," and said during a Wednesday speech that Sinofsky's exit was not an indication of any major strategy shift by the company.

At a launch event in San Francisco on Monday, July 16, software biggie Microsoft introduced the newest version of its Office software suite which – designed for compatibility with the company’s forthcoming Windows 8 OS – unfolds the concept of “Office as a service.”
